There are quite a few BYC members in your area.

I am new to raising chickens. We live in central FL. My question is, how warm is too warm for these guys? My chicks are about 3 weeks old, and I am concerned that the temps in the coop is getting too high....and its only spring :) We created a vent on one side, and there is another opening that they get into and out of to enter the run area. Any thoughts? Thank you :)

It depends on what kind you have. Some are more tolerant of cold and others heat. I'm in Homosassa (citrus county) and have 3 bantam Cochins. They seem to do good here. I have heard of people using a fan to help. But don't know. Are they panting kinda like a dog? If so they are hot.

I finally found a home for my rooster today, and my 3 hens are all chirping and crying way past when they are usually asleep. Who knew there was such a thing as chicken guilt??

  • delder2009 Thank you :) I am not sure what kind they are yet. I rescued them from someone who was given them as an Easter Gift. I know one is a Silkie. But one of the chicks had her beak open, that made me think it was panting. I took them all out, put them in the shade and gave them more water and food. They seemed to be doing better after that. I will keep an eye on the temp.

MamaGallina3, the rule of thumb is to lower the temp from 99.5 by 5 degrees each week, so at 3 weeks old they should be good with 84.5, or close to it. Be careful of night temps, as they have been dropping way to cold for them.

I see a lot of silkie around here. My coop and run is mostly in the shade. I can let them free range because of the dogs I rescued. They eat what they could catch but now they have their own food. And I like my chickens. So no dog food there. Wish you the best Denise
