I am new to raising chickens. We live in central FL. My question is, how warm is too warm for these guys? My chicks are about 3 weeks old, and I am concerned that the temps in the coop is getting too high....and its only spring We created a vent on one side, and there is another opening that they get into and out of to enter the run area. Any thoughts? Thank you

It depends on what kind you have. Some are more tolerant of cold and others heat. I'm in Homosassa (citrus county) and have 3 bantam Cochins. They seem to do good here. I have heard of people using a fan to help. But don't know. Are they panting kinda like a dog? If so they are hot.

I finally found a home for my rooster today, and my 3 hens are all chirping and crying way past when they are usually asleep. Who knew there was such a thing as chicken guilt??

• delder2009 Thank you I am not sure what kind they are yet. I rescued them from someone who was given them as an Easter Gift. I know one is a Silkie. But one of the chicks had her beak open, that made me think it was panting. I took them all out, put them in the shade and gave them more water and food. They seemed to be doing better after that. I will keep an eye on the temp.

MamaGallina3, the rule of thumb is to lower the temp from 99.5 by 5 degrees each week, so at 3 weeks old they should be good with 84.5, or close to it. Be careful of night temps, as they have been dropping way to cold for them.

I see a lot of silkie around here. My coop and run is mostly in the shade. I can let them free range because of the dogs I rescued. They eat what they could catch but now they have their own food. And I like my chickens. So no dog food there. Wish you the best Denise
