Congratulations on your New additions to your family. Their coop is off to a great start. Looks professional! Please keep us updated.

What happens if you can't have chickens in your area? Does that mean that I can't get my chickens tested?

Not sure. I have a friend who has more than he is supposed to have including roosters. He has had his flock tested and I know that was a concern for him but the state came out and tested his flock and nothing was said or done. I don't think the state cares about it but the community (county/city) is the one that sets the rules for the different areas.

Hi, Melbourne Fl here :) Its been about 2.5 yrs now of chickening and its been great but unfortunately we've lost some hens to predators. The constant battle to keep squirrels from eating the chickens' food is also getting to be too much. We only have 2 hens left, Franny (RIR) and Janie (EE), both are laying, Franny about 1 a day and Janie about 1 every other day. Am wondering if anyone would be interested in them, they would be free to a good home. I also have a coop I'd be willing to part with. Thanks!

I have 4 barred rocks, 4 RIRs, & 2 red Sex-links about 20 miles south of Tallahassee near St Marks. They will be a year old soon and thus far have produced more than 90 dozens eggs. Happy, healthy pullets......they have good food, lots of space.

OK! They arrived! Wooo! Mail man delivered them today - little peepers. So I'm an over-worrying worry wart, they are chirping really loud but don't seem to be very cold. My daughter (17) held them all after we opened the box and gave them all their first drink and now it seems they all want to be held. I have a heating pad in their dog crate with a shoe box turned upside down and sides cut out so they can crawl under it - they are spread out in the crate peeping loudly - and I'm worried - are they too cold? Its 71 degrees inside the house - warmer in the dog crate where I have a heating pad set up in a blanket over a shoe box that the babies are under, yet they keep peeping. Not super loud - though one Australorp insists on sitting by the crate door and only quiets when I hold her. I'm just over worried that maybe the babies are too cold? Ideas?

If you have an old styrofoam cooler you can put a lamp kit in it. I use a 15 watt bulb and crack the cover some to keep the temperature around 90ºF for the first week. I use a thermometer with a prob and just put the prob in the box. Works great. Some of these pictures were taken just after the chicks hatched. The first day I just let them dry so I don't put food and water in until the second day. Since your chicks are hatchery chicks they are probably ready to eat and drink. Just some ideas. Here are some pictures. I hope they help to give you some ideas. Good luck with you new chicks and have fun...

The cooler in the top of the picture I also use as a hatcher that is why there is wire in it.

Some of the chicks just hatched and are still wet.

The two styrofoam coolers in front of the Island probably have chicks in them and the lids aren't completely covering the coolers.

After the chicks dry out they go into a brooder cabinet.

Sometimes I use melon boxes to put chicks in

I also have a grow-out coop I put chicks in.
