FLORIDA ANYONE?? Please sign on map!

Hi, All!
Tampa here! I've been lurking for months reading everyone's info...I decided to start participating in all the fun since my husband and I just closed on 2.5 acres of property for me to keep my horses - and now - CHICKENS!

I've been dying to do this for months, and today I went and purchased my little chicken coop (a playhouse from Lowe's recommended on another thread here). Now, I'll have to get busy making all the adjustments to make it a home for chickens. Tomorrow I'll be having all kinds of fun with some hardware cloth - By the way, why do they call it cloth?

I'm hoping to start with either Barred Rocks or silver laced Wyandottes. I'll only have room for probably 4 chickens, so I thought I'd get 3 hens & 1 roos.

Like you all, I'm frustrated by the lack of chicken "peeps" in Florida. I thought I'd find tons of sources in the state...and have come up with not a lot. I read on this thread about Poultry Press, so I subscribed to that tonight to see if that will help me find shows, trades, etc.

I'm so glad to find all of you - Joanne, did you ever make your order?

Warm regards,
Kelly

Hi Kelly!

Another place you may try looking for chickens fairly close to you is:

Florida-Agriculture.com click on "Florida Market Bulletin" on the left side and choose what classified section you want to look at. They have ads for poultry, rabbits, pigs, cattle, horses, plants, farmland, machinery, etc. You may be able to find chickens or something you need for your new property. Congrats!

Thanks, Peeps - I appreciate the info and will check it out...thanks SO much!

Seminole - Hello, right back at you - we're even closer than I represented because we're really in Wesley Chapel...but so many people don't know where it is, so I just say Tampa and save everyone a lot of boring conversation :)

I'm so glad to find you guys, and I'll probably be picking your brains quite a bit. I've had a lot of animals in my lifetime, but never chickens - I'm a complete amateur! I'm off to do some (more) reading...I just bought 2 more publications about chickens from TSC. I'll be back on tonight -

Just got some new chicks that are now 14 days old, include, WCB Polish, White rocks, Cornish X rocks, SL wyndott roos, Egyptian Fayoumis, SS Hamburg, Buttercups and cuckoo marans. I have a trio of ducks, A Rouen Drake, a Female Roeun mix and a female Blue Swedish. I have 5 guineas and 3 white giant turkeys. I will soon have for sale: a pair of silkies, 1 white japanese bantam roo, and now have one SL wyndott roo of the 14 day olds.

I am looking for a pair of Bourbon Red turkeys, resonable priced can be hatchlings or older.
Crossing my fingers to get an incubator for my b-day in Sept..then maybe i can talk eggs...

Pridgey, we need to talk Sumatras!
I am also interested in some Blue orpingtons and dutch bantams or dutch silkies.

My neighbor has them but I don't know if he breeds them or not. The only reason why I know he even has them is because they have been showing up in my front yard for the past few days. I am used to seeing hawks, egrets, even eagles but the pheasants really threw me for a loop.
