Flying baby chicks!! What to do...

My baby chicks are 3 weeks old and flying out of top of brooder and tub. I don't want to cover it because of lamp. Which brings up question
How soon is too soon to clip wings
And
How long do I need to keep lamp on them?

You normally keep a heat lamp on them for 4 weeks. I don't know anything about wing clipping though......

You need a larger, deeper brooder. Chicks are usually on the heat lamp until 6ish weeks, it just depends on how well they feather and what the temps are outside. I brood in a galvanized steel livestock trough and cover the top with expanded metal, and the heat lamp is outside that. You should be able to use a wire screen for the chicks and be fine, but is still sounds to me like they need more space.

I put wire mesh on top, doesn't hold the heat in so no worries. You can use hardware cloth or something similar to make a lid.
