Flying chickens!

How far can they fly? I've never seen truly flying chickens before

To be honest, for a second, I thought the person in the pic was holding a remote and like "flying" the chicken lol.

Anybody who thinks chickens can't fly doesn't know very much about chickens, lol. My EEs love to fly.. and they're awful good at it!

I think at least some can go a lot farther, including yours minnesotachickenbreeder if either properly motivated or conditioned to do so. As a kid, I made a game of seeing how far I could get my free ranging games to fly. Some could do several hundred feet pretty easily. Problem was no method to properly document or record so might as well be a fishing story. Some of those long flights also involved birds flying up through trees to fly back to barn covering the several hundred feet. Trees were pushing 100 feet tall. Flight profile such that more than a couple hundred feet required to reach maximum altitude. These longer flights I think very different from those recorded by minnesotachickenbreeder and myself. The recorded flights not done under duress (flying for ones life) as my earlier observations as kid. The recorded flights by my birds at least can be repeated in short order (minutes). The longer flights I pushed birds into as a kid appeared to be much faster in terms of take-off and horizontal flight resulting in birds being exhausted. Birds would have to rest for some time (hours) after such performances before they could repeat.

I am sure mine could go further but I but have only had them since last spring so by the time they were mature it was getting cold. We'll see how far they go this year, last year they were motivated to fly by the cats!

My Black Japs can fly 25ft into a tree and 50ft out.

What is hatch date on your birds?

Mine hatched late resulting in first set of adult feathers just now becoming complete. When they come into second adult set next year feathers the feathers should be a little bigger on tail and wings and muscle and bone development will be complete. Hopefully flight potential will then be improved.

As I recall ,the best flights were during cooler months outside of breeding season. Breeding birds, except for brooding hens tend to run heavier in the buttside which may reduce flight abilities.
