Flying chickens!

minnesotachickenbreeder,

Are your birds reluctant to land in snow? Have you attempted to get longer flights than 150 feet?

Have you tried to entice them to fly using food awards?

Yes, they dont seem to like to land in the snow so they will fly back to the barn if I take them away from it. I havent really tried to get them to fly further than 150 feet but I know they are capable of it. I havent tried useing food to entise them to fly.

minnesotachickenbreeder,

Food is part of my trick. The supplemental feed is appled at feeding stations some distance from roost. Birds like to fly when first coming off roost. I simply set feeding stations across an open area birds do not like to linger in and they fly rather than walk. Next I will set it up so birds will not be able to meet daily feed needs without visiting multiple stations. Hope is to increasing flying bouts that are voluntary by spreading feeding stations out.

EGGSELLENT PHOTOS! My chickens fly only when they realize there is no way they can outrun their present danger.

I cant remember, I got them from Welp sometime in the spring, of course spring in MN is later than some people think.
Oh don't I know it!!!!!! Nothing like a nice wind on the plains coming from the Dakotas!!!!! I feel sorry for myself on real cold days and just look at the weather map over by Owattana/New Ulm etc. and am happy I do not live there!
