Food Sovereignty

i like the idea of food sovereignty. local communities can regulate themselves. if a producer is haphazard, careless, or inhumane the people will see to it that they are out of business very quickly - and thus people in the business will police themselves because they want more business and profit.
people who seek more honest food are generally a well informed population of people. i don't think people need all the oversight for their own protection.

when areas are told they can only have "white" pigs, or people are put in jail for selling non-pasturized milk to informed customers - who's benefiting?

I quite agree with bj taylor. In my experience local food suppliers are most anxious to show you the cleanliness of their operation and the humane way their livestock is kept and cared for. They pride themselves on the high standards of production and animal welfare. Just imagine that if there was an out break of food poisoning, their businesses would be ruined. The food producers we should be wary of are the ones so far back along the chain that they become almost untraceable, and because the food has passed through so many hands everyone denies responsibility. Decent food suppliers have no problems at all in receiving occasional inspections from the foods standards agency as they have nothing to hide.

I agree to an extent. I do believe some guidelines should be in place to protect consumers, but I do feel many regulations go too far.
