For People In The North East......* Heat Wave* & *Bad Storms*

Its been in the 90s here the last 2 days. The last few days have been incredibly humid with pop-up thundershowers that at one point dumped 1/2" of rain in 10 minutes. We get that around here a lot as of late. My chickens free range and spend most of the heat of the day in the forest or snuggling up against the cool concrete of the house in the shade beneath the deck. They have plenty of water in shady spots and drink plenty in this weather. I go to the local farm market every other day or so and pick up melons that are starting to go bad. I throw one in the fridge then cut it up and give it to the chickens. It's not only a cool treat, but assures they remain hydrated in this heat.
When it hasn't rained in a few days, I turn on the sprinkler in the late afternoon in a shady spot of they yard and they enjoy wandering around foraging in the wet grass.

Why not try and get a Pellet Stove?
they heat up the hole house

Our woodstove is actually bigger and more efficient than most pellet stoves. The problem is the house is very very old and does not have an open layout or any insulation whatsoever. There's only so much retrofitting with insulation that I can do before the historical commission cries foul.

I will take the heat over cold. Heat, I can go swimming for a few bucks' worth of electricity and $100 worth of chlorine tablets. Cold, it costs me thousands every winter to run space heaters, woodstove, and oil backup.

Whew. Blech. Well in to the 90s here today. I checked the thermometer in the coop around 1pm. It read 85. We did have a thunderstorm roll by with heavy rain and now it's in the low 80s. But very humid. The pullets don't seem to be minding it at all and the big chickens just went under the new coop and dust bathed. The ducks were in their glory in the rain.
I went to a nice air conditioned store. DH installed my parents' window a/c units after church but has yet to put ours in.

People from the north that move down here laugh at us for getting out of school early when it snows or ices...y'all get out of school because it's hot???

We don't have snow plows and salt trucks to get the ice/snow off the back roads that's why schools close here. Do y'all not have AC in your schools?

we get out early for alot, i live in the hereford zone where theres 2 mains roads everything else is backroads and we always get out, trust me i know what you mean! and yea my school has no a.c except the trailers.

SERIOUSLY.......There is NO AC in any schools in my area at all. I think school should end memorial weekend no matter what.

So y'all close for snow too? I've never heard of a school with no AC. Is that a northern thing? Do y'all never get this hot up there? I know we have friends (DH's Marine buddies) from Ohio and Pennsylvania and they don't have AC in their houses.
