for people who stop hatching in the winter...

So sorry to hear this. Do you mean re-hatching your flock? Or rebuilding a coop? Good Luck

Re-hatching. We lost 24 chickens and 9 ducks. I hatched 13 chicks that are now 3 weeks old, and I have 17 duck eggs in the bator. I am pretty certain 13 are good. Next is more chickens. We won't keep but one roo, so I need to keep going to get all the hens we need.

Well, I'm sure you are enjoying the hatching part of it anyway. I am way too new at this chicken thing and wouldn't dare to try to hatch chicks, plus I wouldn't know what to do with them afterwards. lol I just don't have the coop room. But I really enjoy all of your threads regarding hatching chicks. All of you are hatchaholics!

I just moved the last hatch of the season outside. They were living on the dining room table and had reached the impossibly stinky, dusty phase. Outside they went.
I am done now until February. It is just too hard to transition them outside here when it gets cold. I don't have a garage or I would likely hatch year round.

As to what to do with them all- you keep the ones that improve your flock and sell off the others. I hatched hard all summer and sold everything. This last hatch was for me to keep and pull from for next season. I hatch because hatching is fun. I don't have room to keep them all though, so I sell off what needs to go and keep the ones I love best. The money helps cover food costs and it helps spread the love of chickens to others. Win Win all the way around!

Too funny. So what do you do with the other 200 or so chickens? Do you sell them, send them to freezer camp or do they just get older and die. I'm just so curious as to you chicken lovers or attics that can't seem to stop hatching these lil fluffy butts.

i sell, swap meet, orders, special orders for an ethnic group, farmers markets, plus i show so you need to hatch alot to find that 'perfect bird'. the rule around here is if it has a name it will not find it way into freezer camp, (a rule I follow for my kids) unless someone attacks the its the stock pot. so there are some 'old timers' around to, most of the time the old timers have run of the open yard

I hatch eggs constantly my barn is really warm and my hens are great mothers, but i have a lot of body heat in the barn too

I knew what I saw this thread you be hatch peddling. LOL

I have only 4 that look so so for my Christmas hatch. I sure hope I do better for New Years.

Now...........come on little quailies and star a layin!

I hatch twice a year.

New Years Day... so that they can at least lay a little while before it gets TOO HOT.

And Easter... so that they'll start laying the end of October and right through the winter.
