for those experiencing the arctic blast....

My sweet husband set up a sink with hot water in the garage... we have about a dozen milk jugs set aside for critter water, and use them for taking warm water out.

Those black rubber bowls are awesome and I use a big one for feed.

If you are consistent with giving them fresh water at certain times, then they will learn to snarf it up before it freezes.

I'm not looking forward to the sub-zero temps (*F) that I know are coming in another 5-6 weeks, and for those of you who are experiencing them now... hang in there!!

Hey gang! I'm over in Blackfoot. My coop is 4'x5'x8'h. I have seven chickens. 3 Brahama's which are supposed to be able to handle the cold, 3 golden sex links that lay the biggest eggs I have ever seen, and a black sex link.

Since the storm moved in, non of them have been outside since last Friday. The winds here were terrible! Now the temps have dropped. -7 last night. I did leave a 40 watt light bulb on in the coop and the waterer sits on a heater that turns on at 35 degrees. Everyone was just fine this morning.

Just out of curiosity, I bought a wireless thermometer tonight that shows the highs and lows in a certian period. Our Alaska gal is a proponant of no heat, so I thought I'd try no 40 w bulb tonight and see what happens. The light will turn on automatically at 4 am anyway.

I really am more concerned about humidity I think. I look at the pheasants, partridge, quail etc in this area and know they can survive. I think the CKS can too!

Good luck everyone!

In those temps eggs will freeze in minutes. Don't work too hard on collecting eggs unless you're home all day and even then you will lose a bunch. We get -20's F every year with -30s, 40's, and 50's without wind chill every few years. Comes with living way up here. In January and February we have whatever Alaska/Yukon had a few days before. It just ends up here. Keep them fed, dry and draft free and we should be OK. I know you are a a bit north of me and farther east, but we get very similar weather. Did I mention that my wife and I scared the heck out of an entire restaurant in Hornepayne a few years back when we rode through on our motorcycles with snow coming down in a freak late August snow storm. The entire restaurant went silent when we came in soaking wet in full leathers. I'm not sure what freaked then out the most, that we were out in that weather, or bikers that far north. We really had no choice after starting in Ross Port the morning, then heading over to White River( home of the original Winnie the Pooh BTW) in the morning and heading north to Ont 11. We ate a big plate of Poutine (french fry's, cheese curds with gravy) with coffee and were back on the road. Headed east after hitting ONT 11 and ended up back in Nipigon for the night. Long ride for a day in that country. Great country you have up there. Very wild and open. BTW- didn't mean to hijack this thread at all. Just had to comment.

Ya I am slowly realizing this winter is going to be a cold one for us northern Ontarians. It sure came on quick and we usually see the gradual temp drops but not this year, dropped real sudden. Dh went out first thing this am and got the eggs, all were still in the cooling process but one, which felt a bit cold, like refrigerator cold, so it was not frozen. I do like the scenery in the highway 11 corridor, very beautiful for sure, but the lake superior area is far better in my opinion, I believe thunder bay is quite breathtaking...well maybe not the city in itself (I hate cities and high traffic) but just the outskirts where you get to about marathon and the campgrounds, like sleeping giant.

Well what else can I say, if we have this much snow now, imagine in a months time, at least it makes for good snowmobiling and snow shoeing, and the ski resorts will be quite happy!! BTW I remember the august snow, only because my company was holding the family day party that day and I was wearing shorts and a tank and sandals and I had to tread through the snow in that...BRRR but luckily it melted rather quickly, that was a bit freaky, it made me wonder why in the heck I chose to move up here!!!! ahahahaha

OP sorry for the hijack :)
