for those experiencing the arctic blast....

I turned up the heat for the water in the coop. They seem fine this morning. I took them out some hot mash.
I did bring in my baby bunnies and momma. The other 2 adult rabbits are alive and hungry this morning. I may move them to the top tier of cages so they have less air blowing up from below.

Hi Dutchie -

I'm your neighbor to the east - I live in Jackson Hole... -20 here this morning (!!) I have a heat lamp on inside the henhouse, and a less-than-stellar heated waterer that needs some help - and my girls are just great this morning. Honestly, as long as they're well fed, out of the wind and have water, they should be alright. This used to worry me terribly until I looked out when it was -30 last year and the chickadees ravens and magpies didn't even seem to notice (though they're adapted to it)...

Not necessarily.. My hens all come out of the coop into minus temps with snow on the ground, even though the coop has a heat lamp running in it, to keep the water from freezing..Maybe they want to cool down..lol

What planet do you people live on? I cant even imagine, in my wildest dreams (or would that be nightmares), temps like that. Its about 80 here, and will be the rest of the week.

You guys remind me of why I left New Jersey.

Halo, I'm in Utah. It normally doesn't get this cold here. But we do get lots of snow. We usually stay in the 30's and hardly ever go below zero. Must be the global warming.

i am in utah. i don't have chickens yet tho. it is crazy how cold it was. it was also interesting to see all the people stocking up on stuff, we went to get a propane heater and most stores were sold out. i went to one store and the guy told me that people were buying multiple heaters at a time. most stores i went to sold out in the first 1/2 hour of when they opened. there was a line of 15 people to get propane and i guess it was like that all day. it was a crazy storm but not as bad as i thought it would be. i am happy all of your chickens are okay

Hm, it is about the same here (-1/-2 C at night which I think is about 30F) and fluctuating wildly. My girls seem pretty good so far, but I am more worried about the snow that will be coming.

So far just a little dusting that hasn't lasted.

I, too am more worried about ventilation (and possible frostbite as winter progresses - my one hen has a huge comb!)

Only one morning did I find their water frozen - in the day it has been fine so far. Not sure if I should splurge for a heated dog bowl or not. They are on sale this week at TSC. Not particularly convenient since I don't have electricity out in the coop and I don't even have an outdoor outlet to plug an extension cord into.

Do most of you just add hot/warm water periodically to the chickens' water or ?

BTW - I LOVE the winter and I wouldn't trade it for another summer for anything!!! So much fun!
