For those of you with goats

Google says that Caeser's Villa is app. 11 miles from Youngstown!! I'm PM'ng you an email and phone number from my AGS directory....these are some of the nicest Nigerian lines!! Even if they don't have any does available for you, maybe they could help you out with buck service later if you can find does elsewhere.

Pygmies and Nigerians are both small breeds. Nigerians have a larger body but they are both small breeds...right?

Haha, I guess I meant Youngsville.

I'm pretty sure I googled the right town!

ME TOO! I think I'd like Youngsville, NC better, though....I just like NC better overall.

Keep us posted on your goat search!

Ok great I found another place near me with Nigerians!

Now, if I get these 2 baby does that are unregistered does that mean they come from bad lines? I just thought unregistered meant they simply don't come with papers. If I get these 2 babies, I can find buck services locally now that I know there's some farms here but I don't want to get them if unregistered means bad milkers.

(someone else had suggested the Nigi to large goat cross - wasn't directed at you, just a warning to anyone thinking about it - you can cross a Nigi buck to a large doe, but not the other way around)

Unregistered doesn't mean bad lines at all (as a matter of a fact - some registered herds are really sorry examples)! All of my Nigis are grade (unregistered with NDGA) but are great quality. I simply wasn't into spending $300-$500 per doe, so worked out deals or found them in unregistered herds.

Pygmies are stockier then Nigerians. I believe they were originally bred for meat.

Just because they are not reg doesn't mean they don't come out of great lines.
My doe is out of show stock and some very nice lines. However she has a teat spur which makes her ineligible to show, so I got her unregistered for a very cheap price. I had intended to just buy wethers, but couldn't pass up the chance for a doe.

Ask questions about the mothers milk production and more importantly the fathers mothers milk production.

I don't think that there's anyway for you to know what you've got 'till you milk them. Someone with experience with the breed could give you an idea of their quality by critiquing their conformation, but you're still not going to know what kind of udder/teats/production they're going to have 'till they freshen. Unregistered doesn't mean bad milker any more than registered means good milker. What I would want to know why they aren't registered--is it because the breeder is only interested in production and doesn't care about registering? Or is it because the breeder isn't putting thought into breeding quality animals? I hesitate to be negative, I suppose it could go either way.

ETA: Hey, y'all need to organize a "goat train" and get some of Kate/Helmstead's babies to NC for Trisha!!

I've seen some of your posts about your goats, Kate, those are some seriously cute babies...and they sound like just what she is looking for!
