In the UK (which is where the original article comes from), the usual rule in a civil lawsuit is that the loser pays the winner's attorneys' fees. That's not the general rule here in the U.S., although frivolous lawsuits can be subject to financial sanctions.

Again, I seriously doubt a burglar is going to be able to find a lawyer to sue on his behalf in a situation like this. It's not like the homeowner is setting up some kind of dart gun booby trap in their shed, after all. It's hardware cloth, for goodness sakes.

I think this is actually just another one of those junk "news" articles meant only to stir up the readership.

Hardware cloth is not a "trap", it's a deterrent. This is one of the most "upside-down" things I've ever heard, which means it could just as easily have been said in the U.S. Rational thought is almost obsolete, I guess.

Also the homeowner can be sued if a burglar injures themselves while on the property even if they cut themselves on broken glass during entry

We came home last year to find we had been robbed and our little dog had been badly beaten by them. My husband mentioned in passing that he hoped the dog had got a good bite in first and the police officer told us we could be done if the dog had caused injury
