Found a butchering video- Method I am going to use

I may do that. I have been empowered by thse 2 videos. I may add a couple more chickens to my order that I intend to butcher. After that if it is too tramatic and I have a hard time eating the meat I wont do it again. If I can cull my 2 hens I was friendly with and had no intention of butchering surely I can butcher 2 roosters.

Thank You Camille...that is a VERY good video! Do they flap around or squack more than he showed? Alot of the videos, they make the cut and then phase out quickly and then on to after the chicken is dead. i guess to "spare" the viewer of seeing the chicken death. But I wanted to see the WHOLE thing to prepare myself so I was not shocked. I was shocked at how long my 2 hens that I had to cull flopped around and think I heard a few squacks...but kindof blocked out the memory a little, and I did not stay right there and watch them. So I am not sure EXATLY what happened. If I get any roosters in this batch of chicks coming in May I AM going to butcher them. Last time I gave them away to someone who butchered them. What a waste of money!

You can do it. I know you can. You have the strength.

My birds were dead when they convulsed. That is their heart stopping. By that time they hardly have any blood left at all, which is why draining them by cutting the jugular is better for the meat, as the heart pumps it all out. They just get tired. Also, if you've ever cut yourself deeply, you don't usually feel it right away. I've had some pretty bad cuts, so I know how long it takes to feel it. By the time they could feel it, they are already long dead.

Yes i have cut myself and only realized it because i saw blood on the cutting board and i was cutting veggies. Thank You for the confidence. I am going to give it a try and see if I can completely switch to butchering my own chickens...no more buying the nasty meat in the store!

I cant wait to get to that point. I never want to have to buy meat from the supermarket again. Id rather raise what I can and the rest buy from local farmers who follow my beliefs in raising their animals

It's hard to get used to the texture difference. Real home grown chicken from dual purpose birds is different from grocery store in the texture area, and way surpasses it in the flavour area. In my opinion anyway.

Gg706, I hope to hear when you do finally have some boys and decide to do it. I always sell my extra girls unless there is something wrong with them of course. I do sell boys, but those who aren't sold, or who are mixed are used for meat. I do not give away boys to have them meet their fate through someone else.

It's a lot easier if you have a mean rooster to try it out on.

I actually really dislike the taste of chicken usually. its bland and has no flavour or texture even when cooked right. But when I bought freerange chickens it was absolutely DELICIOUS.

Was it free ranged dual purpose chicken, or free range meat kings? Meat Kings are butchered young. Dual purpose around sexual maturity. The dual purpose birds are a bit tougher, but really big on flavour. The tough parts are usually the thighs. The breasts are nice and tender.

Im not too sure. It was from springbrooke farm. If you know their farm you could probably tell what they work with.
