Found egg in run, safe to eat or balut?

I get many perfectly clean eggs. But there is always that one girl that doesn’t wipe her feet first.

Put it in water. If it sinks it should be good.

OK, passed the water test. Sank to the bottom and laid on its side. If I understand the water test correctly, this indicates the egg is still fresh.

Yes, the older the egg, the more gas develops inside and causes the egg to rise in the water. That's how I test my eggs when I lose track of when they were laid. I still open floaters since they may still be OK to scramble for the girls.

Now, I don't know if Balut eggs sink or float but I doubt anyone sat on it if you have no one broody.

I don't have any roosters, so I know the eggs are unfertilized. Since the egg sank in the water and laid flat, I think I'll crack it open outside just to be safe, but I'm thinking the egg is still good.

I only get about 2 eggs per day as my girls have just stated laying. So it's easy for me to use the oldest eggs first as they all fit into one egg carton. When I start getting more eggs, I may have to consider other options. I am considering getting an egg skelter like this one on ebay for $10.68.

The only problem is that these egg skelters are for medium or larger eggs. Most of my eggs are still small, or even pee wee, as the girls just started laying. Small eggs will just fall through the wire as I have seen on YouTube reviews. But the egg skelter looks like a very nice way to store your medium or larger fresh eggs on the countertop. If anyone has any experience with these egg skelters, I would like to hear from you.

I use one but we get more eggs than the skelter can keep up with. Ours does hold the tiny Serama eggs if you put them in carefully.

Yeah, I expect that with 10 hens, my wife and I will soon have more eggs than the skelter could keep up with. Most days I only get 2 eggs, but I have had up to 4 eggs in one day. The girls are just starting to lay and are not consistent, and eggs are still small in size. But the eggs are getting bigger and more pullets are getting closer to start laying.

Just toss that one. You have no idea how old it is or what has happened to it. Your health isn't worth risking over an egg that is literally worth .25 cents.

Of course you are right, health is paramount. But I'm still in the phase where the WORTH of the egg may be only 25 cents, but the COST to me is still around $50 per egg!

Thank you. I don't know when this egg was laid, but I know my white egg laying pullet only starting laying eggs 2 weeks ago. If I would have seen the egg on top of the leaves, I would have a better idea of the lay date. But, being buried, I can't really say.
