Found in a book. What is it?

That's not a California whites.
California whites are built like a leghorn the bird in that picture is built way different than a California white.

I searched splash rosecombs and all those birds look similar to Sebrights, not the round little hen Matthew posted. From the size of the chicks, I'd guess she's a bantam of some kind.

Not sure I ahve the same book. LOL But when it tells you what breed of chicken is in the photo I go No it not!! Like calling a Barred rock a rhode island red LOL
 
You have to consider that she's a mama... Mama hens do tend to puff out alot more then when they don't have babies. I have a bantam RC RIR that looks like a cochin right now.....LOL I' still sticking with Splash Rosecomb

I talked with a very nice lady at Ogden Publishing today. The editor said the hen on the cover of their magazine was a mixed breed and they have no idea about its lineage. It sure is pretty! Donna
