If you have an avian vet near by it wouldn't hurt. It looks like her toe was smooshed. If it doesn't seem infected I think a lot of folks on the forum would put some neosporin on it an watch it for any signs of problems.
I have an appointment with a vet tomorrow after work. It's not easy finding vets who take chickens but this one works with chicken rescue so I feel good about that. I now have the option to either rehome her with confidence, or keep her and adopt a friend. I have to see how much work and time I have to devote to her welfare.
Nellie ate about 20 baby crickets, 10 wax worms, a bowl of mixed veggies, and 2 bowls of a mix I made consisting of cracked corn, sunflower seed, oats and parakeet seed. Also whatever insects wandered into her pen. I put in a bowl of keet grit and oyster shell, and a plate of chinchilla dust. Along with a big bowl of water.
I also gave her a square plastic bucket, on it's side, lined with wood shavings to sleep in. She spent the night on TOP of the bucket. I'm thinking of suspending the bucket from the top of the cage, with a parrot ladder leading up into it. I wonder if she would like that better?
If I keep her I will get this coop, and modify the nest by lining it with heavy duty insulation and repaneling over it. I have a nephew carpenter who can make the alterations for me. Winters are cold and I'm not comfortable leaving an animal outside.
I'll let you know tomorrow when the vet ID's her and gives me a prognosis.
Im thinking she might be a Jersey Giant but not sure, Ive never really seen one in real life but they say thats how you can tell them from a australorp or black sexlink
Wow, she got quite the feast. I'd lay off the oyster shell until she is laying. I heard it could cause problems. Good luck at the vet. I'd keep her, but watch out, you may end up having a whole flock. I was going to only have 2, but that quickly turned into 8.
