BTW, Nellie only needs one other companion. I had two hens who were very happy puttering around with each other.

I believe she still looks like a she, she would be darkening more in the comb and wattles if she were a he, HOWEVER that said I dont have Jerseys sooo.....

She is a SHE, i'd almost bet on it. That comb looks small to me, and pale.

Yes, her comb is very pale, yellow waxy looking. Can someone tell me what those jowly things on either side of her throat are called? And is there a special name for those big ears she's developing? I need a chicken anatomy lesson!

What great luck! I grew up in a very rural area, now live in a suburb - and no chicken EVER just wandered into my yard! Who'd a thunk it in Brooklyn! Good for you!

They're called wattles. And the ears are ... ears. They're feather coverings over simple holes. BTW - I understand that dark ear-covers indicate brown eggs. True, folks?​

You wouldn't believe some of the critters that have passed through my yard. Woodcock, quail, partridge, raccoon, a pet rabbit, and some interesting wild birds at the feeder. I caught a canary, a cockatiel, and several parakeets in my yard. Tried and missed an AFrican Grey and some Quaker parrots. And I smell skunk, but have never seen one. I think I'm a stop on the animal underground. Nothing surprises me anymore. I'm waiting for some more chickens to show up so I can have a flock.

I have a brown egg layer who has white ears. I don't know if dark ears mean brown eggs but I can safely say that brown eggs do not mean dark ears. ​
