The part about this I find disturbing is when a writer sits down with his literary agent with a publisher and is introducing his writer/client why the writer would not catch this mistake.

Sounds like the start of a bad joke-

3 illiterates, a writer, an agent, and a publisher, sit down at a table, and one says...

The answer is that it wasn't a mistake. Either,
1) he was lying then to keep foreign aid for his Harvard education
2) he is lying now, for obvious reasons
3) he doesn't really know where he was born (none of us do, can you remember?), and was only retelling what he'd been told, in which case, who knows where he was really born.

Regardless it is really disturbing. Our political system is BROKEN.

Errors of all sorts happen in things like this - doesn't surprise me one bit, its like that game "telephone". I catch errors in novels and textbooks all the time, one of my "peeves" lol
