A gaunt adult coyote may weigh 25 - 30 pounds. A healthy adult coyote goes 40 pounds +/- Some coyotes will go much more. Auburn tinged coyotes are common, reddish ones, not so much. I say that you saw a fox.A coyote? But his color was a bright red. I don't think he was over 15 pounds. and that's pushing it....
I feel awful for you guys having to deal with so many predators! Im in Australia and only have to worry about foxes. One got into my cage on tues morn it killed one of my ducks and we just saved 2 others in time but 1 has a bad neck wound. The fox broke the latch and opened the gate I couldnt believe it could do that so im too seeking info on fox behavior. My 3 ducks are back outside after nursing them back to health but now ive got a padlock and key on the gate,2 bricks a plank of wood and I put 2 of our garden chairs against it too...lets see that horrible fox get through that! Good luck to you I know how stressful it is trying to keep your animals safe!
Well, we haven't caught them yet. There are 2. Male and female. We have lost 4 of our hens this week!!
Laying in bed this morn, my little mini schnauzer suddenly perked her ears, jumped up and looked out the window. I sat up and looked and there he was, trotting thru the yard. Bedroom is upstairs, so by the time I grabbed my robe and put shoes on and ran down stairs, grab the gun, he was long gone. I ran down to the far back of the yard where he went into the field, but didn't see him. Fortunately, DH decided to wait a while to open the coops before he left. I was off work today, so I was to open them. So my plan for the day was to set out and wait for Mr. Fox to come back. I set out probably, 2-3 hours total, with periodical walks back in the field, no sign of it. DH came home around 4:30 He took the riding mower and mowed the high grass that was behind the chicken lots. He mowed way down where we know they come thru. Finished mowing, sat next to me under the tree where I had been sitting. We sat there maybe 10 mins. Heard chickens kinda clucking. I raised up a little just in time to see Mr Fox run across the garden area, away from the chickens. DH grab the gun from me, and ran down to where it went into the field. He said it was just meandering around when it saw him. It took off. Mini schnauzer took off and tracked it, but we didn't see it anymore. DS came up this evening and set trap. We are using a Roo in a live trap as bait. We aren't using the live trap to catch the fox, just putting the roo in it for protection. We should have a fox by tomorrow morning.
I'm so amazed they are so brazen to come out in broad daylight with human activity. Twice in the last week, they have been right off of our deck, running thru the yard! They must have young, because a couple of years ago we had the same problem, the same time of year.![]()
Sounds like you may need to remove the screen from your window and keep the gun in the bedroom, then when you see the fox out in the yard just open the window and open fire, it would be a nice elevated position to fire from lol.
