Free Chicken Apron/Saddle Pattern

I bet Laura, you could extend that neck portion a bit on the pattern for those ducks of yours. Something else for the drakes to hold on to...

My new rooster got in a fight with my drake last night. :/ I'm not positive, but that's what I'm thinking. The drake has been mounting his ducks AND the hens, and I don't think the new rooster liked that very much. I separated the drake into the garage, because he's a bit beat up. :(

If nothing else, maybe the ducks will have a chance to recover. But I'm still going to be working on a pattern for my little Khaki Campbells. They are bald from the back of the head to their wings. Maybe some sort of collar thing that is a bit like dracula's cape. Haha.

So I made my first saddle today. I have to give the disclaimer that I stink at using a sewing machine and I didn't measure anything, just looked at the picture and sketched it out.

I used Southchick's pattern because I really liked how it looked on her hens. But I used denim on top, and fleece on the bottom. I wasn't going to use fleece at all, but the denim was really thin because they were jeans that I used to wear a lot, and I didn't want to double up on denim. I still have to go get some sealer for the denim, but I figured I'd try it on since it's sunny out today anyways.

I made it bigger thinking I was going to use it for my Orpington, who is a little bigger, but then my sewing machine started acting up and my Aunt is coming to help me with it tonight. I figured that if I only have one done, I'll use it on my worst hen, so it's too big for her.

Again, rough draft right here. I didn't spend a lot of time on it just in case they hated it or just threw it right off of them.

Awww you did good! Some of my saddles got lopsided. My sewing machine is old and has some quirks...plus I don't really shoot for perfection myself. LOL. But once the saddle is on it looks great! Don't worry too much about it. And it's protecting her back. That's the main thing! Hopefully soon you can take it off of her when she's grown out her beautiful feathers.

I hope so! She's not bare, but the feathers are brook about halfway down the shaft, and since her "down" is white, it isn't very pretty.

I've got about 5 more to make, but my aunt wants to look at my machine. It's an old machine that was in really good shape from a family friend. I really only know how to thread it and make it go. When there's a problem, I give up and walk away. Lol. I'm so new that I don't even know how to refill the bobbin...or even put it back in correctly. HAHA.

Yeaaaah, I wish there were classes or something on it. :p

Have your aunt spend a little time teaching you.
