Free Chicken Apron/Saddle Pattern

Pics
I learned Home-Ec class in the 8th grade....that's been a few hairstyles ago...LOL. Have done a few baby quilts for friends, couple Halloween costumes when the kids were real little but recently now employed for chicken gear.

Anyways, MIL gave me her mothers 1960's or so good heavy Husqvarna. Yep I thought they only made chain saws too...but apparently they do sewing machines as well. Swedish company if I'm not mistaken. It's metallic green entirely metal and quality. I took it to get it fixed for looping (just a tension issue) and the old guy at the vacuum/sewing machine center stopped me afterwards and asked me where I got it and told me that he goes to Florida during the winter months but if I ever needed it fixed to bring it back when he was there and what a pleasure it was to work on it. (It has original owners manual and all the parts to it...a real wood sewing desk it fits in.) Pretty nice gift. But it needs to go back to the older gentleman for a date again as it has it's tension issue again.

Husqvarna = Viking.

I made three chicken saddles for my girls this week... I will be trying them on a few of my hens this weekend!!!

I bought some purple material to make a few more... only got enough to make these square ones.

I want to try the ones that have the swallow tails, but need to find a pattern for it (or I'll just wing it).

Those are nice ones and I tell you why. The natural colors are good if your hens are out free ranging. That color selection there will keep your girls safer. Very nice. Nice neat sewing too. Much neater than mine. LOL. Yep...you can probably easily cut out a swallow tail in your pattern and have that saddle look just fine. Great work.

Hi, so I made an apron for one of my hens that had not born the amorous advances of Rusty the Rooster very well. I placed the apron on her late fall. Well, she seemed to tolerate it well enough. It started getting cold so I just decided to keep it on her for the winter. I finally removed it late Feb. it was a mistake to keep it on her for that long. Her skin had kind of calloused over the elastic on her shoulders. I was very careful not to make it too tight, in fact took it off a time or two to go in and adjust the fit. She wore it all winter. I am sure it hurt like heck when I finally took it off. So, be aware of my mistake and remove the apron as soon as you get some feather growth returning.

You make a good point Craftychick. I had some elastic on a few of mine but didn't make the elastic length short enough and my hens slipped them off somewhere out in the woods. At this point I had polar fleece left and made skinny lengths of that for the strapping and as I put it on the hens seemed more comfortable in it--less itchy with it or something. It still stretched to some degree for getting them on. My saddles now have evolved to felted wool sweater No-Sew cut outs...that's not as soft as the fleece but softer than the elastic and I don't have to sew. Perfect weight...etc. Those wing crooks take a beating from the rooster treading though too along with the backs.
