Free Chicken Apron/Saddle Pattern

Anyway, here is my attempt at sewing a chicken apron.

It looks more like a superhero cape to me.

I think it might be a bit large as she has almost no feathers. She is a really heavy and strong hen though. She's queen of the flock and now she has a royal robe to prove it.

Good job, is that just plain cotton? I think that I need to make quite a few of these soon! I just adopted several hens that are missing a lot of feathers!

I have used these with great success.

I usually put them on my hens at night. Grab them off the roost, put on the apron and put them back on the roost. In the morning, they are just fine. If you try to put them on in the daytime, they keep trying to back out of them and it drives them crazy.

I would suggest that you use plain, dark fabric. Don't use red -- it attracks pecking. Don't use a small print that might look like interesting insects to the other chickens.

I have made something much like this several times. I always make mine out of polarfleece because it's a bit stretchy and doesn't ravel, so it requires no hemming, no sewing at all.

I make two wing holes, really just long slits, about 2" long. You can cut one out like the pic then kind of lay it on her to see where. I used to keep a pattern when I got one that fit well and went on easily. Hint: you only need to leave about 2" to 3" to cover the back between the wings.

I have a hen wearing one now. She doesn't need it any more but pays no attention to it and I'm reluctant to take it off during cold weather; think I'll wait til spring. She's worn it for a few months. Had one on a Leghorn one time that stayed on for a year; she's not easy to grab, even off the roost.

I've never made or needed any kind of belt or fastener to hold them on, I just slip them on like a buttonless jacket.
Hi there, just saw your post. I tried making one out of polar fleece. Just tried it on my hen. Let's just put it this way...I'm glad no one was watching! I used the pattern from the other post. No sewing and just cut slits like you suggested. When my hen fluffed up, the saddle folded over her back, leaving her bald and now scabbing spot exposed. Did you have that problem. She's picking at it now so don't know how long it will last. Do you have any pictures of yours? Thanks for your help.

This looks great...what are the dimension on the polar fleece chicken apron. I have three chickens I have been spraying with blue kote for weeks now to camoflauge feather loss. This would be so much easier. My hens are bantams.
