Freedom Ranger Vs. Heritage Breeds

Breeding the Kings to your Ameracaunas?
It's a thought, but like I said earlier, I have concerns for the carcass shape of the Kings. They seem more clunky in their stride than I was hoping for and seem to be growing faster than hoped. So far, I like what I'm seeing from the Sasso/Ameraucana hybrids, but we are still a few weeks from knowing for sure.

I am curious to what effect pea-comb will have on the carcass. Why don't we see the commercial breeders utilizing pea combs? One would think it would offer an advantage. Peacomb does impact how the breast meat attaches to the breast skin, but I can't see how this effects quality.

Nice birds with good movement.

What end weights and cull times are you aiming for?

French type meatbirds (free rangers) 12-14 weeks. I harvest larger males at 12 weeks, smaller males and larger hens at 13 weeks, and then clean up the balance on week 14. It's a good way to do the rangers given the diversity of growth rates.

Heritage 15-16 weeks. Won't happen this year, reality is that they will go 22-24 weeks. Had it down to 20 weeks, but screwed up my selections a couple year's back and accidently let a Malay infuse into the line. Careless and stupid, I'll be paying the price on that one for years. Good thing we can eat our mistakes.
