I'm giving paw paws a go, I bought saplings a couple years ago and have kept them alive so far. We're also trying the strawberry fruit tree and that's a couple years in the ground. Persimmon is one I've been wondering about for here too. I only have a little over an acre so I have to do a tree culling before I get anything else. I love perinial food sources.

Good for you. I've never heard of those. LOL. Me too

I started some persimmons from seed. They grew really well to start with, I think I had about 10 plants... then they slowly died on me. They do NOT like to be over-watered. But I'm going to try to start more of them soon.

I just got an email! My seeds are in the mail!
:weee
It makes winter a bit brighter when you have sproutlings to take care of and watch grow. Makes spring seem closer.

Yes it does...:thumbsup
Which bird?  The golden sebright?

Glad the storm wasn't too bad!  6 inches isn't enough to cause any problems...  :D

Yes nice bird.....

Even the cold weather ones? I plan on getting my Swiss chard and potatoes in by late March.

No I can put potatoes in at end of May.
It snows most years clear into May.
We get frost til about June 10th.
Some years later....then we lose our garden.

I'm going to hay bale garden this year.......

wet the bales down for a few weeks, then plant the seedlings in the bales, with some compost.......

be like having a 24" raised bed.......much easier than fighting the dirt with a tiller.......

Hay bail gardens work great. I planted my potatoes in trenches this year and back filled with straw. Got over 200lbs
Of Red potatoes this year.
400
nice ones too!!!
I seriously grow way more than we can eat....it's an addiction....I think when I start hatching the same thing is going to happen......hmmmm.maybe I should quit while I'm ahead and just buy a new boat....:/

Phil, I will not be breaking the bales up. I will be leaving the strings on them and actually planting on top of the bale

That makes for a seriously short growing season :/

I thought the same thing when Bert told me he was using hay. If you had drainage issues, and no frost issues, I can see the advantage. But I have perfect soil, just bug issues :/

I knew what you meant I've done that too...that's why I said it works good...no weeding. I'm a seasoned gardener. I've tried most everything once. I'm organic too....I'm the guy everyone comes over to check my garden out. Well most years anyway...this year I'll actually have the time to do more projects in the garden. It was amazing to watch how well the duck pool water worked in the garden last year.
