If you think of it that you are raising a known quality, known handling food source, it's easier.  That I have a lot of birds and don't name them all helps.  Some have names.

I think most people name a few...the ducks I have now are mostly safe....the have names from me...the other four my wife has claimed....but seven is the most I'll keep here....so anymore I may hatch will be sold or eaten...unless I get a lot of interest in duck eggs....I like them but I grew up eating then.

Yeah, I don't get happy about butchering, but I'm the one that's pulled the straw. I was raised farming, my hubby from farm blood but city raised, and my area is now almost suburban, so my kids get grossed out. Wusses.

It's funny my daughter is the one that had no problem killing and eating...no one thought she would ever pull the trigger on a deer either...she has killed more deer than both my boys combined. When I was contemplating killing "Mean Duck" her response was "I got room in my freezer"...with a smile.

she's actually pretty amazing...she was born three weeks after I was diagnosed with leukemia...asked God to let me live long enough for her to remember me....she's 20... God owes me nothing...I'm in over time.
