French frogs

Let me grow out and process the boys and meaties then see if I can make space.  I'd love to have some...

The plan is to rotate the old birds out, half in August when the littles start and the rest in spring, which means I should start more this summer for winter/early spring start.  I hope that allows me to stop changing flocks every two years and simply cull as needed since I will be able to tell who is who.

Oh, I know you're packed to the gills right now... just want to make sure you don't hesitate to holler when you can take more... :D

So we have had an injury :/ one of my 4 week old chicks has a fairly serious leg break. Not completely sure how it happened, maybe stepped on? Or got caught in the fencing? Regardless it is one of the faster growing crosses. Thinking I am going to design a sling from a sock (it will probably work for a week) with food and water access and let it grow a few more weeks and then process him early. :/

Shank or thigh?  If thigh, just process now as a heavy bird will have a real problem.  If shank, polyfill batting, popsicle sticks, hockey tape and vet wrap will keep it mobile until processing time.

Thigh. I can cull now, but there is no point in processing him yet, way to small (He isn't a Cornish cross, he is a pioneer) it will not heal. And while he is getting around it is hard to watch, as soon as he puts a little more weight on he will not be going any where. I just thought I could maybe keep him alive for a couple more weeks. The 7week olds could be processed, they are small but big enough to eat.

Yep, absolutely and without a doubt those are 2 girls... great odds!!

I was guessing all 4 of those were girls, but one was just a tad lighter, so I sold it with another, and kept these 2.

That's awesome! I needed these. One is a bit bigger, but they are both super friendly.

Thanks for the confirmation!

Ugh, I'm sorry.

Yeah...I am going to give it a shot and if I can make him comfortable enough, I will try to keep him. I can always change my mind and cull.

The dead giveaway is the breast feathers... only the girls get salmon breasts... when they start feathering in if any of those are black/blackish, then it's a boy... ;)

I was so happy when I saw those little peachy feathers! Was hoping I wasn't imagining it late last week, but its like they bloomed overnight!

lol... that's usually how they do it...

Any of the Duckwing types, Silver or Gold, or Black Breasted Red are fairly easy to sex as soon as they start feathering in... easiest and simplest thing to know is the hens will never get black feathers in the body... only the boys will...

Great info, thanks. A friend just hatched 6 of my girls' eggs this past weekend, so we're anxiously waiting to see how the colors turn out.
