French frogs

Honestly, I think my opinion differs from most, so take it for what its worth. They are super gorgeous birds and I love looking at them, but "mine" aren't friendly like most people say theirs are, at least not yet. The males are huge (turkey huge) and beautiful, but ran like little girls from my Brahma rooster. They are slow maturing. Their eggs aren't as big as you would think, for the size of the bird. But they are desirable, and mine are nice quality, so if they produce well and I can sell some eggs, I'll keep them for a while. Otherwise I might sell the birds themselves and make better use of the pen. (like BCMs or Ams from SC lol) They do hatch pretty easily though.

I wouldn't mind trying bantam orps!

But I'd say do more research on them.
You say when ;)

@WVduckchick Here are those photos I promised!!! Finally!!

Here is Stella holding Crusty

Here is Bruce Wayne....starting to think pullet. So a name change maybe in the future.

Bruce again.

Lastly, no name. It's the CLB fibro that I think is a cockerel.
Stinkin cute! That's what it's all about.

Got my first OEGB egg today!

I assume its the OEGB. She looks much further along than the Sebrights, and she has been submitting to the boys.
I'm adding 5 more OEGB hens, as soon as I can go pick them up, so I better get to work on their own pen.
Wow, too many irons in the fire!

Nice! Are you incubating them?

First batch of Marans in the incubator!

First offspring from my Foley pair. I think they are looking really good.

Now on to my project birds. These are the birds that hatched out of the lavender Wyandotte (or self blue) eggs. If anyone is good with genetics I could use your help. Where is Sally Sunshine? Isn't she good at this stuff?

The theory is that I should end up with partial laced birds from this pair (SLW x Lav) Lavender Wyandottes are made using Black Wyandottes. What I have so far is Silver Laced Columbian Wyandottes split for Lavender. One thing I'm confused about. If the Lav birds are hiding a black bird base then shouldn't the silver/gold gene be s+s+? and if that's the case shouldn't these chicks I hatched be sexlinked? Maybe these are both pullets? Shouldn't the pullets be silver and the cockerels be yellow or golden?

Dad, Mom and firstborn SLW in the background. Two project birds in the foreground for comparison.

Another comparison shot. Why does it seem like the SLW on the left has so many more feathers? Does the one on the right look like a cockerel? Maybe that's why the feathers are so different?

Comparison.

Comparison.

Any feedback and smartazz comments are appreciated.

Beautiful birds!

As far as the sex link, with the barring, the hen has to have the barring gene, and the roo not be a carrier to make a sex-link, and then the cockerels get the barring gene. I don't know much about the silver/lacing aspect, but I am interested to hear what you find out.

Are those your Davis eggs? I'm loving watching mine grow, but they won't start laying until August.
I don't know anything about project birds, but your first offspring look awesome

I'm keeping my next batch of AMs to grow out and see how my pairings are doing

Ok...

Anyone else would have gotten a

I may have to negotiate for some hatching eggs next year, after I see how my Paul Smith Ams look. Another month until they ship...

Silver is sexlinked kind of like barring. If the female doesn't have the S silver gene then she basically has a s+ gold/yellow wildtype gene. Since she only has one gene to pass the male offspring with two would have S/s+ and should appear gold. And I think all the pullets would get an S from dad and appear silver. At least that's what I think happens. Anyone clarify?

Sexlinking can be done with barring and some colors like silver.

Ok...

what did I miss? Yes I confirmed that the darker eggs were Bev Davis. The "other" bird has a solid #4 egg and I'm not incubating those. I will probably sell that girl off. She has great type and color, but it's all about them chocolate eggs.
