I feel a little silly but Oh well, I'm having more fun with chickens than I've had in years. Silliness and all

I guess I can stop worrying and think about holiday prep now.

If anyone else checks in, do you have a feeling about whether the chicks should be sent out to muck around in the mud or should they stay in the coop?

I checked on mine several times a day with the really cold, icy weather we had. (checked on the older ones frequently too) Had to make sure they had food, water wasn't frozen, and they weren't piled up on top of each other.

I just let mine out in their little run today. It's rainy, but not especially cold. (44 degrees) They've been in their little coop over a week now, so they know it's home.(until I move them to the big coop when they are a little older) They have been cruising in and out all day long. My older ones came over to check them out too. (their fences are next to each other so they can see, but not touch) I'm going to switch the bulb to a regular light bulb and transition them off the heat lamp. They aren't using it much anyway.

Hmm, I opened up the door for my chicks and the 2 larger ones came out right away the 2 smaller ones stayed in and everyone started crying for eachother. The bigger ones couldn't figure out how to go back up the ramp to get back to their sisters and we had to help them back up. The 2 little ones had no interest in coming out today. Guess I can't blame them much but it sure would be nice for them to get out and stretch.

My little ones stayed in their coop all day yesterday. They did not want to go out in that rain and wind. It was so wet and now muddy in the backyard. My bantams feathered feet were so nasty dirty. I got up a couple of times last night just to check on them. Once I fell and ended up in a gross mud puddle!!!! Grrrr......I know they can survive weather so much worse then what we have, but I cant help it!!!

Glad to meet you Jess N Jeff. I guess we're just a bunch of softies down her in SoCal. Glad I wasn't the only one tripping around in the rain last night because of chickens that were just fine...
