Euskal Oilia (the Basque Hen). They are reknowned for their friendly nature. Even the day old chicks will run to you and try to climb on your hand instead of running away. I think there is a National breed Club? Great people in the breed! See :

I know they are looked down on because they are a cross breed, but our Golden Comets are the most gentle chickens I have ever come across. They are SO people oriented...maybe too much so. They are bad about flying into your arms or on your shoulders when startled. It was cute when they were small, but these are full grown chickies now and when two or three fly for you all at once, it's very startling! But my three year old niece can grab them up and carry them around with no trouble, so I am happy to have them just the way they are. Since they started laying, each has given us a lovely brown egg every single day; never a miss! Which is, as I understand it, exceptional. I will say though, we know other people who have Comets too that aren't as snugly as ours. Still gentle and handlable, but they aren't hopping up in anyone's lap for a wing rub. That comes entirely from being handled A LOT every day since they came to live with us. We have some Rhode Island Reds that are very handlable too, even the roos. But they aren't like the comets, even though they have been held everyday since they were hatched. AND the RIR's only lay about every other day. I suppose I am biased, but that's just my opinion.

Buff Orpintons, Mille Fleur, and Light Brahmas...hands down that these are the friendliest
Mille Fleur is a colour/variety not a breed. I think you'd find that Mille Fleur Leghorns are just as flighty as any other Leghorn.

If you are looking to keep decent egg production/size, I'd say Orpingtons are a good bet.

Silkies are very friendly as are my bantam cochins, but bantam breeds lay smaller eggs and silkies in particular can go broody often.

I'm sorry, i didnt make it clear, not just the color variety, i was talking about the mille fleur d'uccles. Yes, leghorns are flighty but I wasnt talking about the leghorns. Sorry for not being clear :)

We became proud "parents" of 6 beautiful Red Sexlink girls on Saturday. These are, I believe, also known as Red Star or Red Comet. They're 8 months old now, so not babies but not totally grown up either. They didn't have a lot of handling in their early lives, and of course, don't really know us yet either, but of the 6, only one is a bit skittish. They ALL come running to us if we just near the pen, and all but that one are pretty easily caught and once in your arms don't fuss at all.

Their relatively calm nature and amazing productivity are the 2 main reasons I chose this "breed". They started laying at 5 months and up until the move, never missed a day. We've had 5 eggs from them since Saturday afternoon...none yet today, but I'm thinking we'll have more still.

I suspect that if we'd had them from chicks and handled them a LOT, they'd be even more friendly and even have high hopes they'll do better and better as we all get to know each other.
