Friendliest Chicken Breed

Yeah it really depends on how the bird is raised.

Silkies are a nice breed.. They are more to make a fool of.

I have polish and they are the same way. I raised them to be spoiled lap birds. And thats what I got haha

I got my first chicken was I was 16 years old (I am 21 now). A beautiful silver polish hen. I raised her in the house. And when she was a few months old I put her in a brooder with the silkies. She is honestly the friendliest bird. Honestly I will be sitting down by the table eating my sandwich. She comes over and pecks my legs for a bite. And If I don't give it to her she jumps on my lap

. Its kind of hard to ignore her.. She expects attention from me. And I give it to her. She is more like a little kid then a chicken.

I still can't believe its been 5 years.. She is the best chicken/pet I have ever had.

I agree that it's how you raise them. All of my older girls (12-13 wks now) will jump up on my lap if I'm out there in a chair... or will jump up on my shoulders if I'm standing too close to the roost!

These older gals are barred rocks, black and red sex links and an EE.

I admit that I didn't give my younger ones quite as much attention as the older ones because the brooder was in the coop for them instead of the house (we hadn't built the coop yet with the first ones). They still like me and will come up to me, etc, just not as much as the older gals. There are 2 exceptions, though. Belle, my silver-laced wyandotte, is my special little lap chicken

If I don't pick her up every time I go into the coop, she'll come up to me and peck at my feet a little until I pick her up

and Eva, a younger black sex link, will jump onto me. She's a feisty one. These younger ones are australorp, wyandottes, BSL and blue orpington.

I have 3 EE girs (maybe 1 or 2 are boys though!) that I bought at 7 wks from our local egg farmer. They are very skittish and clumsy compared to the rest. They're slowly coming around to not being scared of me but I doubt they'll ever be lap chickens. They were just raised as some of many and there's no way they could have possibly gotten as much human attention as what I give.

I have both the BO and the Brahma breed and prefer the Brahmas over the Buffs. They have the sweetest disposition. I have both Light and Dark and love holding these birds.

I purchased several different breeds of standard brown egg layers this year and already had Wyandottes, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, and Rhode Island Reds in the past.

The Speckled Sussex I got as chicks are the friendliest chicks I have ever seen! As chicks, they would investigate a hand lowered into the brooder and often hop up into it! Now when I go out to the chicken yard, they are the first to come over and visit me. Least afraid, most curious. They will readily fly up onto my shoulder, and one comes to my feet and looks up at me, and calmly allows me to pick her up and hold her. The rooster will quietly sit in my lap. I did not spend a lot of time handling any of these chicks.

The other chicks raised at the same time that I am comparing these to are Rocks, Wyandottes, EEs, Welsummers, and Barnevelders.

Ok - I'm a TOTAL newbie here, but here is what I observed....

My brother and his neighbor (he has the incubator) hatched some of my brother's eggs with the understatnding that the neighbor gets the roos for the freezer and my bro gets the hens (layers) mostly barred rocks...but the first 11 weeks of their life basically they spent in a pen in a barn with the only human contact at feeding and watering...well I ended up with a few of those hens and they are pretty flighty and don't want anything to do with me (unless I've got something for them to eat)...

Now, my neighbor lady has some pullets about the same age as mine to get rid of....and I went to see hers (I want a variety) and she climbs right in the pen and picks them up for me to look at, all diferent breeds - barred rocks, RIR, brahmas, and orps...some seemed to love her...but all of the breeds were pretty friendly towards her and pretty calm...She told me it was because of the time she spent with them....she brooded them in her utility room and basically hand raised them...

So, how they are raised must really make a big difference......now I can't speak to how 2 different breeds raised in the same exact way behave....but this experience has taught me a lot

Brahmas are a very sweet, docile breed. They are so big and fluffy and sweet it's adorable!
As are Silkies, Buff Orpingtons, and Cochins.
It all depends on the individual bird, though, and how much attention they get when they are younger.

Call me crazy, but my friendliest birds are my White Leghorns. (I have three. They were raised in the same way as all the other breeds I have, but they are simply the friendliest)
The most demanding of attention is Princess-

Third I would recommend OEGB's. Mine are extraordinarily friendly!

Frankly, almost all of my birds are super sweet. I guess it's how they were raised. Despite their raising, I do have a few breeds that remain obstinate and shy- my two minorcas, my silkie (although she's coming round) a barred rock, and (of course) my OEGB roosters.
