I am getting some new chickens for 4-h and I was wondering what kind of breed I should get that are pretty friendly? Oh and how old should the chickens be to be entered into 4-h?

Any chicken, if handled regularly, can be tame, pretty, and friendly. However, many bantam breeds are often tamer and sweeter. I've heard especially that the game breeds (Old English Game and Modern Game) are especially people-loving. Silkies, Wyandotte Bantams, Cochin Bantams, Dutch Bantams, and D'Ucccles are other ideas. If you want large fowl, Orpingtons, Australorps, Cochins, and Wyandottes are some friendly breeds.

Keep in mind that not every individual in a breed will be as tame as the other. Some birds, even if handled regularly, won't become as tame as others. But, in general, if you want a tamer chicken, handle them everyday.

To show, you want chickens at least five months old. Younger than that, and they won't be mature enough to show to their advantage.
