Did you get him directly from Ideal or through a middleman? Like TSC?
my local feed store uses ideal, so I went through them to save on shipping. I've had 2 that I ordered directly. My local TSC uses Privet. The 2 I got from privet started off as very puny and sickly but have turned into gorgeous boys

Wow. Sounds like a good deal. Did they charge more for a special order for you than they would have charged if you just took them out of the bin?

Just a comment about TSC [or any place] that you get chicks from a "bin" The folks at TSC aren't always very knowledgeable about chicks or chickens at all.
I watched one girl unload a few new boxes of chicks into bins and she mixed them all together because it said "Pullets" on the boxes. She thought pullets were a breed.

Took me a minute to figure her thoughts before I stopped her. Her boss was sure unhappy and had to then try and sort them again.
So you have to use some wisdom of your own when you select chicks, and don't rely on TSC or anyone to call the correct breed.
Just FYI

Well, while I am on that subject.....this may be cheating a little but if you go Murray McMurray website and some other ones also, they show baby chicks "live" at the hatchery. You can learn what various baby chicks should look like.
I went to TSC and was frustrated that I didn't know what I was looking at in the bantam bin.
I also learned what day they got chicks in each week.
So I armed myself with chick images and then waited at least a day after the chicks came in, sometimes two days.
I got exactly what I wanted...was correct on the breeds and also got Frizzles every time I wanted them, they had curled feathers after a day or so, MOST folks couldn't even see them but I knew what they were.
I felt like a crook but knowledge is worth a LOT!
Again FYI

LOL Very smart! My little Red Frizzle Cochins were about 3 days old when I started seeing the down/feathers starting to crinkle up. They look so odd now, in with the other babies. They are about a week old. I bought them last Saturday.

I am hoping to visit TSC soon and see if they carry chicks and if they don't have any, find out if they carry them at all and when they will get more.

I would be surprised it the TSC stores still had chicks coming in, they usually only get them for a month or two in the spring.
But it don't hurt to ask.
I got a pretty black pullet and a Frazzle looking red roo. i think the third one i got is also a pullet but not exceptionally pretty
, I'm letting them grow up some before I decide if they are worth keeping.

I have swiss cheese for my memory. LOL I did go ask today and they said they have chicks only in the spring. I don't remember if it was March/April or April/May.

My Bantam frizzle Cochin roo named Pixie :)
