Does anybody feed Nutrena's Feather Fixer feed to their frizzles? My frizzles are 3 1/2 months old and have beautiful feathers right now but I'm wondering, when they get off chick starter, if I should plan on feeding this Feather Fixer just because their feathers are frizzled. Thoughts?

Also, at what age should I open the nesting boxes on the pen that my frizzles are in?

Nope, I just keep feeding mine chick starter.

What breed are your frizzles? Some breeds mature sooner or later than others...

Do you mean that you feed your frizzles chick starter their whole life?

The mothers of mine were just barnyard mixes as far as I know and their dad was a Sultan.

@Rose66 , like howfunkyisyourchicken said, there's no need. The only frizzles I would consider giving that to as a preventative at first might be frazzles (offspring of frizzles bred to frizzles- this is a no no. Always smooth to frizzled.) bc they usually have weak, brittle feathers. It probably wouldn't help much though.

Just feed chick starter for as long as it says to on your bag. Then, switch them to grower/starter grower. Then as they approach laying age, put them on layer pellets or layer mini-pellets

Yes, I feed chick starter or grower ration all their life (with oyster shell on the side). All of my frizzles are from ornamental breeds (Silkies and Cochins), not production type breeds. They don't lay as consistently as production birds, so I never feed them layer. They take the calcium they need from the oyster shell instead of getting it from every bite of layer.
I buy layer for my egg layers if its cheap. If its not, they get the same feed as my Silkies and Cochins.
Your frizzles wont need the feather fixer, there's nothing wrong with their feathers. Just treat them like any other chicken

So *is* it better to keep them on starter/grower for life with oyster free choice? I just got into ornamental breeds recently with the hatching of my silkie roo. I've had layers otherwise.

He and his frizzled and sizzled ladies will be laying age/breeding age soon, so I picked them up this 16% mini layer pellet that I love (non gmo, non commercial) and they are halfway through their first 50lb bag.

I realized ornamental breeds lay a lot less than standard laying hens but I figured dietary concerns were the same since I hadn't put much thought into it. Now that you say that though, the info clicks so now I'm concerned. I don't want them to have more calcium than they need. Should i let them finish this bag then switch, switch back now, or....?
