Cute picture IM...how did you trick her?

Thanks NFC. Today was her favorite ball...The trick is to get her to ignore the phone in one hand with whatever works in the other hand and hope I'm quick enough to get a clear pic.

I've been working on getting the chicks to roost in the big coop for a few days. They're doing well.

The first night I moved them one by one to the low roost in the main coop. The second night I herded them into the coop through the big door-not fun. Nights 3 and 4 I went out at dusk, found them huddled at the pop door and unceremoniously pushed them through it as a group and closed the door.

The morning after night 4 I went to let everyone out and found roughly half the chicks were out. They must have been in the mini coop and stayed quiet when I went out there. I've left the pop door open on that because it's an escape from the bigs and the rain where they won't be harassed.

Last night I left both doors open until dark, did a yard search and checked the mini coop before I closed up. If anyone is out this morning then they've found a place in the big yard to hide where they are able to stay dry.

New plan moving forward with breeding:

The goal is to breed size into my Nn flock. The white Nn roo is solid with the big girls, I've seen him mate with the red and buff.

I'm going to keep one of the little Nn roos that are growing up with the red meat mixes rather than than one of the older boys. I think this is the wisest choice to meet my future goals. The big boys are starting to chase each other and I can feel the tension so it's time to put them in the freezer.

The end result will be a maximum of 12 chickens kept for breeding and eggs, 2 Nn roosters with 8 to 10 Nn and/or meat bird hens between them. I can then mix the offspring from each moving forward.

I don't plan to have separate pens, but I'm going to make some modifications to the mini coop so they can house themselves separately if they want to.

It sounds like you're getting a lot of rain IM...is that your normal winter weather?

Good job on getting them in to roost!

Sometimes. We didn't get much rain on my side of the valley from monsoons so I'm welcoming it with open arms. Rain seems to make the plants extra happy and I don't have to go out and water in the cold

It's pretty foggy out there this morning. They say there's more rain to be expected. I got so full from the lasagna and garlic cheese bread dinner last night from Buca di Beppo's, that I couldn't do desert.

We did breakfast with the family and just had leftovers for dinner. No dessert that way.

That's self control? Lol.

It sure is. How many batches of shipped egg's did I try to hatch this year, and how many pullet's did I end up buying just trying to get girl's from unrelated blood line's? Plus I got Roger too for my new roo. I paid $25.00 each for those 3 Barnevelder pullet's that have still to lay the first egg. Then I have the 2 younger Olive Egger's that are still growing out.
