Fugly Farm

Got the yard cleaned up a bit, washed out the wading pools in preparation for storage and cleaned out the fire pit. Took the real eggs from under Attila and kicked her out of the nest, talk about a bad attitude. :gigWas straightening up the compost pile and found ants so flooded that area. Possible rain tomorrow/Monday. Weather folks are saying we may be done with triple digits, but I still have a block of ice and the waders are in temporary storage for now.

Henna went into the shade garden today to eat some weeds and one of the chicks approached her. They stood face to face and there were a couple of gentle pecks when a few gentle verbal warnings weren’t enough. She is such a good girl, I’m glad it was her that met them first.

Phoenix is growing his saddle feathers and his tail is starting to look more like his dad’s. He’s afraid of me, but knows that I toss food into the coop for him. The pigeons don’t know I do this and he doesn’t get chased off the food bowls by Attila.

I am irritated. Went to the feed store and the girl told me they’re out of all flock and suggested layer feed. I said no thanks, I have a rooster and young chicks. She rolled her eyes at me. Rolled. Her. Eyes. Then proceeded to tell me that my rooster doesn’t need anything more than scratch and the chicks and ducks will be fine with layer feed. They might be, but the eye rolling was enough to make me angry today so I gave her a dirty look and walked away. Never going back.

Your frustration is understandable IM. She was rude and wrong both. Is there someplace else local you can buy your feed?

I'd call the manager. Her misinformation could be harmful to another flock.

This is what you should have done

Went out after dark and took the broody out of the nest. It was a dangerous affair, all snapping beak and flapping wings. I couldn’t hold her against my body with one arm to open the big door and put her on the roost, so I shoved her through the pop door and locked her in. That is one mean chicken. I tried kicking her out earlier in the day but that was even more dangerous.
