Fugly Farm

Playing in the dirt sounds like fun IM! You guys are way ahead of us with anything gardening related, so I'll just sit back and enjoy yours:)
Yeah, we haven’t used the heater at all this “winter.” Realistically we can garden fall thru spring here now, summers are too brutal.

That's what we learned trying to garden in Florida...spring was best because summer was too hot (and buggy). I don't know if you get all the bugs there in AZ, maybe that's more of a FL thing due to the humidity?

It depends on how much rain we get for sure. It has been so dry that right now I have a few flies because ducks lol, and we’ve had bees in the lemon tree. I’m not even done picking lemons and it’s got flowers on it already.

Not the greatest pics, but plants are in the beds. The deep, long beds had settled quite a bit after leaving them fallow. Last year I buried the waste from the coop under the dirt and wet them down a few times. This year I topped each with a bag of soil that I amended with perlite and vermiculite. The rectangle bed just needed the perlite/vermiculite mix added. Each plant got a healthy scoop of worm castings.

It’s sunny and supposed to be around the mid 70’s today but a cooling trend is headed our way. Sounds like some good days to work on cleaning things up and getting bulk trash out. I also have some more small debris I want to burn.

It's nice to see some green!

Henna today. She and Attila have just finished growing their feathers after molt and I love her new look. She’s the boss.

It’s a beautiful day here in the Valley of the Sun. Warm enough to have the open for some fresh air, and the wind has. Died down after yesterday.

The ducks are still laying, but so far I haven’t seen any evidence that the blue crew have started. I figured they’d start around February but I still check. Attila is a rotten chicken.

I’m feeding Nutrena All Flock pellets, $22 for 40 lbs. For five chickens and three ducks one bag lasts roughly three weeks if I supplement with some scratch once in a while and greens a few days a week. I leave a bit of feed out for the ducks all night but otherwise have to stay outside near the feed to keep the pigeons at bay. If I didn’t they’d double the feed bill quite easily.

The pepper plants both died as we got some frost a few mornings, but everything else is doing well. We had some clouds yesterday that stayed overnight so none today. Only got a few sprinkles, enough to make a mess in the dust on my car 🙄

Been going through the freezers and pantry the last few days. I’ve cooked a bunch of meat and vac sealed it, prepped a bunch of DIY rice mixes and meat helpers, and put together some mixes for onion rings and brownies. All with the bits and pieces I found, no shopping. Also made a big batch of rib rub and some DIY brown gravy mix plus a batch of liver jerky for the dogs.

Grocery shopping for this week is done, holy cow things are expensive! Thedogs went for a ride to the feed store. I watered a few things in the backyard, gave the crew clean water and some cilantro. Putting my feet up and watching a movie until I need to start dinner. This has been a busy week.

You've had a very busy week IM!

Good job on the food prep, all of that will make meals easier (and no wasting stuff)...I'm impressed.
Thanks Debby :) There are big advantages to cooking when it’s cold so it’s a quick reheat when it’s hot.
