Fugly Farm

Yes coming along but I’ll say right now I’m not happy with my hatch. The whole point of Nn is to get Nn. I’m less than thrilled that all but one are fully feathered. I’ll bet you $10 that blue baby is a cockerel and end up in my freezer.
Do you have any recourse with them...I mean if they sold them as Nn's, shouldn't they have all been Nn or is there a chance that they won't be?

It would depend on if the flock was mixed and had some fully feathered necked breeder's in there or not. Sometimes it will also depend on how may copies of the NN gene that the flock has. I do have a few fully feathered necked girl's in my flock, but they lay either a different sized egg or a different color, so I know what hen layed what egg. My rooster Roger had the smaller bowtie on him instead of the bib and that is one of the reason's why I kept him.

Thank you!
I didn't hatch. I'm about 2 hours from Ideal Poultry so I drove and picked up ten chicks. I'm addition to the NN, I bought 2 langshan, 2 brahma (a buff and a light), 1 russian orloff, 1 welsummer, and 2 (sr) crevecoeur.
They are all very friendly.
It sounds like you’ve got a great flock! I’d love to see the other chicks as well. I would be in big trouble if I lived that close to a yesm:gig
Sorry you didn't get all NN chicks. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your blue is a girl :fl

Hatching seems like such a crap shoot.
It’s definitely a crap shoot. Perhaps I’ve been exceptionally lucky not to get any fully feathered birds so far from the Turken eggs I’ve hatched in the past.

Bluebaby is right, the degree of nakedness depends on how many of the genes the chicks inherit from the parents. There’s a higher likelihood of fully feathered chicks if one of the parents is fully feathered. Probably no recourse, and that’s ok. It is what it is. I’m going to pick up Bigfoot tomorrow so I can weed through what I’ve got and go from there.

I’ve spent some time with the birds and have a chance to see how things are going. The new gals are still a separate flock and Cuckoo is their arch enemy. She is MEAN. I also heard a chick in despair earlier and she pecked it a couple of times. I pecked her and hard and she split. They are locked in the brooder for now. Cuckoo is definitely a serious mom, she tried to beat up one of the new girls last night too and I got after her for that as well. Probably shouldn’t have but she’s rude. All 5 of the older chicks have been adopted by her.

I’m going to put the known AC cockerel on Craigslist next weekend I think, but I need to get some good pics of him first. Also looking to get rid of he d’Uccle chicks so they’ll be on as well. Once they’re gone I’ll be down to the six hens and one rooster, plus the chicks. I might put 2 of the Turken chicks on there also.

@igorsMistress
Now don't you want that AC so that you can get some fibro nn girls?
I haven't taken too many pics so far because they all crowd into the corner when I open the brooder. Lol.
Here is one of the langshan girls

Yeah mine all crowd too lol. I really like the Langshan, she has some striking markings wow :love

I’m unsure of the sex of the other AC chick. I was hoping for a pullet so I could put it with an Nn roo. I was down to the Nn roo and 5 Nn hens plus my crazy Cuckoo. The heat took my roo and 3 Nn gals so I’m kinda starting over. I can only keep one roo so it’s gotta be an Nn Roo with hens of various types to get a good mix.

I really hate the summers now days. Our humidity is so high here (east Texas) and it makes chicken keeping very stressful in the summer. Thankfully we were only above 100 for a couple of weeks this year.
I almost lost an orp/ee mix hen this summer. She had layed an egg, left the nest and just dropped by the waterer. Fortunately I was outside at the time. I took her inside and place a cool damp towel under her wings and left her laying on the cool shower floor for a while. She got to spend a few hours in the house and I put her back with the other birds that night with no further problems.
I'm so glad fall is here! Hopefully our winter will be mild.

She is a lucky girl that you were there! I’m so happy we don’t usually have a lot of humidity to go with our heat. Ugh!

I found my birds on the coop floor in the morning, no such luck. It hasn’t been horribly hot the last few days but we had 54 days over 110 this summer so I’m still giving the birds ice blocks every day. Maybe just the next few because temps will be nearer 100 toward the end of next week.

I'm going to try making a few of these next year

This was a fairly mild summer for us and I was glad it stayed mostly under 100. Mine seem to deal with the high heat days much better than they do with the days when we have extreme humidity.
One of the reasons I bought more chicks was so that I could get more langshan. They seem to be very hearty in all weather and they're excellent broodies too 😊.

Do you have any pics of your grown Langshans? The chick was sure cute!
