Fugly Farm

Last night I had to tuck a few babies in, but all are out and about today. They are tiny babies, a few smaller than usual I think.

I just went out to top up the food and give them clean water. I tossed a few tiny seeds out and some chick grit. Mama has them all foraging about and she’s clucking away. The babies won’t or can’t follow her out of the coop so need to figure that out and what to do about a nest if she doesn’t go back to the box tonight. She was after Elvis but he isn’t taking her broody craziness. The rest of the flock seems to leave her alone for the most part.

The chicks are really doing well, all are thriving despite the stretch from first to last hatch. They all made it into the nest box on their own tonight. I think I’m going to close the pop door after the bigs come out. They keep eating the babies food and I don’t want small birds in there. There was also a cat sitting on the wall watching the chickens a couple of days ago and I’d rather not have a slaughter.

Everyone quit laying already :hit No eggs in the nest boxes, I looked all over the yard under trees and bushes, only one egg and I’m not sure how long it was out there so I tossed in the compost pile.

I love that time of evening when we can all hang out for a bit and enjoy the nice weather. The crew foraged and hung out while I sat at the picnic table with some water and looked at all the work I need to get done. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day.

Glad to hear your littles are doing so well! And glad your weather is nice enough you can spend some pleasant time outside.

Nights are chilly and daytime temps are fantastic right now. The chicks are growing feathers like crazy. The wings on the black look dark grey and the white chicks have some white and black on the wings. I’m going to bet there are three boys and four girls.

Do you need another boy (or 3) for your flock IM?
