Fugly Farm

Stormy started with a weird neck twitch a couple of weeks ago and she quit laying. I checked her crop in the morning but it was empty; she had a lump and it wasn’t an egg. The lump has grown bigger rather quickly and while she drinks and poops she’s recently off food. We’re going to put her down 😔 Keeping the chicks in the shade garden for now. Hopefully their temporary brooder will hold them until they’re too big to get through the chicken wire into the yard. I built it from whatever I had laying around; a few cinderblocks, the door to my shed and some lids from some totes for shade. Very much a budget brooder. They’re probably almost a week old so around mid September I’ll let them out of there to mingle. In the meantime I’m going to clean out the coop and work on getting the rest of the chickens in there for bed. The bigs are molting; Henna has one tail feather :gigI gave them some reconstituted BSFL this afternoon and they were super happy about it. When we put down Stormy we’ll deal with the second rooster as well.

Update on Elvis and Toast:

They were put in an enclosed shade area with four young but fully grown ducks and some baby goats. Nobody in that group will leave the area to join the rest of the farm. The kids went to band the baby male goats and when they did Elvis lost his mind and tried to attack them! Everyone in the enclosed area is his crew, that is their space and he will protect them all :love Surprised me and them too because he has never been human aggressive. Of course I didn’t ever pick up his girls except at night in the coop when they got a check up.

Mess with Elvis' crew and you mess with Elvis!

We got rain, enough to make puddles for the ducks. I went out to check on everyone and Henna wasn’t smart enough to show the boys one of the coops to stay dry. She is a good mama otherwise, but I need to get her back into the coop at night. The new chicks are dry, snuggled together in a corner of their shelter and nothing got blown over but I’m pretty sure I’ll have to toss the food in there. The ducks were having fun in the puddles, and it’s not Phoenix who is crowing but the other guy. I can’t hear rain unless I’m outside, and thunder only if it’s really loud cracks nearby so I’m not sure how bad the storm was. Watched the radar for overnight and it could have been pretty crazy out there.

Glad everyone is ok and the ducks are enjoying themselves!
