I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your goats and other asst. livestock/farm animals. Tom reminds me so much of my precious barn cat that came to us as a kitten in August and died in December. Boy, he was a rare gem.

That cockerel of yours is quite the nice-looking boy!

Any clue what he's a mix of?

My goodness, I can't believe we now have 28 LF hens, 15 bantams, and 9 ducks, with 4 more LFs and 6 more bantams on the way. That makes 62 birds in total! We're crazy for doing this....

Well, then, that seals it! He'll be awesome for sure with that Campine blood in the mix. My sweetie pie, Alex, is also a Golden Campine and by far one of the best chickens we have (if not the greatest).

@Alexandra33 Thank you! I know she will, but I'm hoping it's a she. I'd be so sad if it turned out to be a boy. I think I already have tons of roosters, and I can probably only keep two or three out of all of them, and I already have so many beautiful breeds! Do you know if the SSH roosters are nice roosters?

Pomp's Mom (the one that laid the egg, not the one that spent 21 days incubating him

) is a Golden Campine, and she is a naughty hen. We have a big fence (2-3 acres) for the chickens and the goats, but every morning she still jumps over the fence and is outside of it most of the day. She lays her eggs somewhere in the woods outside of the chicken pasture, and it is hard finding them. When I finally do, there are usually about one dozen of just HER eggs.

Today I heard her squawking and went to see what was wrong, and one of the cats was sitting in her 'hidden' nest on top of two of her eggs. She wasn't happy.

@CherriesBrood , it is an awesome combination! If only he were a she..... Anyway, he'll be a good rooster.

What are you planning on doing with all of your cockerels?

@CherriesBrood , are all your birds straight run? You'll know soon enough whether Poppy is a pullet or not, since the cockerels show early.

I honestly don't know a whole lot about SSH roos, but I can't say that I've really heard anything derogatory about them. I guess like any hatchery-bred male, they could go either way.

My 15 chickies are also straight run, and I'm REALLY hoping I don't have too many guys in the bunch. These are by far the most docile chicks I've ever had the privilege of knowing, so I'm thinking the boys will be nice overall. I had to think about it, because if a chicken is show quality from a breeder, they HAVE to be good natured to be handled by judges. Roosters included.

Now for an even scarier thought: what if they're ALL sweet?

@Farmgirl47 Well, I don't think I could ever cull them, or have them go to a home that would cull them, so I probably would make a rehoming thing on here, and see if anyone wants them. Certain breeds though that I got are rare so I would charge for those, if they turned out to be cockerels. I'm hoping I don't get more than 5 cockerels, but the hatchery I ordered from really messed up this time. Almost all of the chicks have really big combs, and they are only 4 days old. I'm really disappointed. :/

@Alexandra33 Yes, except for two that are a barred rock and Kokcoo Marron mix. Oh that's good! I am sure hoping though that it will turn out a female. Yeah your right, either way I might be giving it up if it is a cockerel because 8 other breeds are unsexed including 4 silkies, and I'm hoping for one male and three females for them, plus tons of my other baby chicks have huge combs, and their all only 4 days old! :/ Your so right! My hearts already bonding with so many, because they are all so sweet, and lots just want me to hold them! I already know though that the welsummer is a boy, the clues; Huge comb, tried to get on top of another chick in the mating position!!! I was really looking forward to some redish eggs form it. So much for that. :/

Could I see a picture of the Welsummer next time you have the chance, Cherry? I have a Wellie hen, and it would be neat to see how your baby compares to how she looked at that age.
