start to day 28 I'm sure from when I noticed mom on her eggs full time for 24hrs straight and not 1 external pip, and only a few of the 8 have rocked every now and then. I was hoping to see start to some external pipping when I woke up, there were 3 that would rock and kind of slowed down. Lock down began Thursday late morning. Thursday night I or at least Friday I started seeing some rocking and here we are on day 28 and no one has externally pip. I'm starting to have a feeling I may have problems with this batch, but then again I can't be 100% sure on the incubation schedule of momma because she would get up go back where the eggs would cool, ect. Where as it's been a consistant temp since Thursday. So I don't know what to expect since I didn't take the eggs until end of day 24 per my schedule of noticing mom sitting full time. I'm not going to intervene and pip, I did a quick candle on 1 on Friday and it was not at showing signs of the bill retracting in/out of the air sac, should I quick do a candle on the ones that have not rocked at all to see if any show their bills in the air sac? That is what helped me determine that the others were early and plus just holdin the egg also helped me determine if they were dead simply because of how fast it cooled. I wish I could honestly say this has been a pleasant experience for the newbie here, seems like a lot of newbies are having better luck then me with their 1st clutch. I just do not know what to expect with this last batch since I allowed momma to do it for the 1st 24hrs.
Just leave them alone. There is nothing you can do anyway if you candle and find some not to be alive. Either they will make it or not. I think you will have to deal with the same issues as with the last eggs. They may pip a little bit late because they were outside with the mom and she may have not been so perfect with the temp. Chart their first movement, because this time frame will give you better answers. I hope some will pip, because those were the ones that have made it in the past. At least we know 2 have made it nicely, it would have been worse if none had made it. Not just for you, but also for your sons. I'm hoping for at least 2 more.
Yeah, so far only 2 of the 8, maybe 3 have rocked. I thought I heard a tiny little peep, it's a bit nerve wracking because usually that means it's ready to pip or it's in stress like the 4 were and all was quiet there after. But I'm not going to panick to much yet for the reasons you stated. With my batch I incubated I had the day/time that I started incubating and it was clock work maybe a bit early but it was clock work, with these as you stated, moms temp wasn't consistant. I'm suppose to go to my nieces confirmation this afternoon, maybe I'll come home to a few that are pipped. I can only hope! I have adorable pictures of imprinting with my 2 ducklings and boys that I'm going to post!
Ok, ok, I know I shouldn't have but i did slightlly candle them from inside the bator, I did not take them out, but they are all alive! For now, however, I do have 2 that appear to be up side down, all the others bills are poking at the top of the air cell, the other 2 are near the narrow part of the egg away from the air sac, but I can see their bills unless they haven't totally reached the air sac however they are the ones that I noticed moving before the other ones have started, so they are most likely the ones that are in danger of losing their lives. Myt question is, I know it is a risk of Shrink Wrap, before the others pip, should I set up the Genesis and get it warmed up for these 2 and see what I can do? Should I intervene with those 2 tonight if nothing is taking place? I feel that time is ticking away for these buggers. But then again, I could be totally wrong. As I said, I did the candling quickly and not touching the shell, enough light to see what was going on, and no one has pipped. But there is certainly a difference in position with the 2 out of the 6. I know, I know, let nature take care of itself. At least I know which ones to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Hopefully those 2 will turn themselves into the upright position.
Now that wasn't the brightest thing to do. You have a still incubator for hatching. It will take for ever to get the humidity back up, because it does not have a fan. You are in lock down that means fingers off and no candling. Also ducklings are in the egg with their bill being tucked under, which makes it look like it is upside down. It will all resolve once they get ready to pip internally.
Ok, ok, I'm in a bit of a panic mode because of last weekend and things going so terribly. Yes I know it wasn't the smartest thing, but the temp is 98-99 and humidity is still good, I didn't open it long or keep it open long, the humidity is 79-80% currently even after I candled them 25min ago and humidity is still climbing, it's been ranging 82%. I'll leave well enough alone now that I know all are alive and what is to be will be because I'm leaving for the day which will be a good thing because that means my hands will be off!
WE HAVE AN EXTERNAL PIP!!! One of the eggs I thought was a mispositioned baby has a external pip in the airsac area!! I might have a baby by morning!!!
