"Humff," grunted Pepper. Cedar sent a look of appreciation towards her chick. "Maple's right, we are lucky to have such a good supply of food and a great location for our nest!"

"Yeah. You do the work and we get to sit here and eat it. Or, at least I do." Pepper complains. Maple said cynically, thinking the last part.

"I'll go get you two a squirrel or a snake," said Cedar spreading her wings and taking off. Cedar scanned the forest top and swooped in for a closer look. She saw a snake sunbathing on a pile of rocks. Cedar circled and dove straight for the snake. She grabbed the snake spearing it with her talons. Her wings spread out to protect her prey from any other predators looking for a meal.

Cedar flew up to the nest with the snake. She tore off bits and fed it to Maple and Pepper. Pepper was peeping non-stop. "More! More! More!" she chanted.

Maple just smiled and chewed pieces. She wasn't like most chicks, always asking for food. But her silence gave her the advantage of actually eating it.
