Black rat snakes EAT Copperheads, woo!

I've read that. Hopefully the many black rat snakes here are keeping the copperheads in check.

Had a tiny yellow ring neck get into my greenhouse last year. He was hiding under a bucket. At first glance I thought it was an earthworm until I saw the yellow ring at the base of his neck. I just helped him outside. Also seen several worm snakes when planting stuff.
I think the green ones have such a pretty shade of green. Don't see those as often. Couple years ago, we caught a red-bellied water snake in the strawberry netting. Only one I've ever seen here.

Snakes in the yard means you have a good wildlife habitat.

Speaking of never knowing what you'll see...

I went outside to the coop to feed grapes to the flock. Martha was very pushy but while she and the others were gobbling their grapes Abigail, the boldest of the Dominiques, took a grape from my fingers!


Within a minute or so of the end of the grapes I heard a terrific screeching, and saw Samuel holding one of the Dominiques by the neck, attempting to mount her. She was struggling to get away. Suddenly Joel grabbed Samuel by the back of HIS neck and mounted him! Samuel ran, managed to get away, and peace was restored.

Guess we know now who's top rooster.

Samuel is closer to standard, but has to accept second roo, for now.

I know nothing of the Sussex standard but Samuel seems to have richer color and a bit nicer comb. I love the spots/spangles.
Both are very handsome!
