I noticed over a week ago that one of the smaller chicks seems to have a funky middle toe on its left foot.

It seems to get along just fine.

Injury or defect?

Best post that in a thread on the emergencies, etc. forum to see if you should give him a chick shoe or not.

when I had ripples in my apron, I would simply cut a line through the ripple to help it lay flat and pin it down with the landscape pins.

I was concerned that even if I cut it the staples would still pop up. For some reason the staples don't grab as well on that end of the run as on the other three sides.

Some soil is just so soft it doesn't grip.

I'm working on finishing my raised beds this morning. I had two bags of peat moss in the back, on a pallet. Once removed there was a fairly good sized pile of leaves, pine needles, and bugs.

I put some of it in the run:

Like throwing chocolate bars in a playground full of children!

I added some fresh feed to the big feeder, set the little feeder next to it. Some of the chicks figured it out:

Two of the chicks are definitely growing larger and redder combs:

"Purple" is no more aggressive than most of them, allows me to pick him up but "Blue" pecked my hand twice. Hard. Both times I restrained him in my lap until he stopped struggling (a new habit of his). Watch out, bud, you can become soup!

Arby's comb is larger and redder, too, but he's totally laid back, until Blue goes after him, when he fights back. He comes up to me, pecks my shoe, and I pick him up. I like his personality.

Here are others whose combs are not as large or red (all from Saturday):

Blondie

"Purple/yellow"

"Red"

"Green" (on left)

No leg ring

Am I reading too much into the behavior and comb development?
