fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Ran errands this morning, then went outside to work on the hoop coop.

Main waterer was a little green and scummy. I dumped out the water, added more from the hose, plus a splash of white vinegar. Suddenly I noticed a bunch of bubbles had developed, but most popped before I could get a photo.

All clean, being refilled:

I created a feeder cup for oyster shell flakes from a plastic tumbler I'd gotten at a fast food restaurant. I attached it using an adjustable clip.

But it was a little high, so I added a clay pot to the equation, as a stepstool. I sprinkled a few of the flakes and called "chick chick"!

They all ate the flakes, but not from the cup. I tried it on the opposite side.

Martha found it first.

I unrolled the shade cloth on the north side, shook off the debris, then rerolled it under, using the clips to hold it in place.

I'll get some short bungees to batten it down.

Repeated the process on the south side, next to the woods.

I went back inside and discovered that all the oyster shell flakes had been picked out of the cup and scattered.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Chickens are so very like toddlers!
This afternoon I saw that the cup was empty, and all the flakes were gone, so I added some more flakes.

And a few minutes later...

A couple minutes later...

As long as they're eating them I don't care if they toss them about, first...

Thanks!

Last night just before dark I checked out the coop. Suddenly there was lots of noise and one rooster started chasing the other around and around the A-frame roost. One flew to the top of the roost (not the usual nighttime roost) and the other approached the door, scratching and eating. He then flew up to the short roost by the door and talked to me. It was Joel, current Chief Roo. Samuel remained on top of the A-frame. I'm not sure who won that round, but ALL NINE were on the new roost later on, about 10pm.

If Joel lost, why would he be calmly scratching for food?

:hmm
