fuzzi's Chicken Journal

I went by the local nursery on Friday, picked up a bale of wheat straw for less than $6!

A couple flakes of the older straw made them very happy!

They look good!
Do you see Joel nap quite often? I'd check his crop to make sure it's emptying overnight.

Mine love to get straw, I just put the whole bales in the runs and they will work on them. Plan is the bales give them hiding places on windy days.
Well. They have worked on them, straw everywhere! That's o.k. it keeps them busy.

Finding straw for less than$6 is a great deal if the straw is nice. It's $9+ here.

Joel has always been a napper, since he was a chick and would nap on my lap.

What's the deal with the crop? Should I check in the morning?

I would, just to be sure it's emptying. Check it before he eats/drinks in the morning.

If that's normal to him, then no worries.
My roosters might cat nap during in warm weather when they are lounging in the dust bath or spread out in the sun in the winter, so for me it's unusual to see a cockerel/rooster napping during the day standing up in the midst of their flock:)

I have seen similar holes around my run and greenhouse. I think they are mice. I've caught 2 mice in my greenhouse this week.

Sometimes I will set snap traps outside the run and cover them with a crate to keep other animals from sticking their nose in them.

I have been seeing cats lately roaming our property. So far I've counted 6, all adults. I wonder if someone put them out nearby. :( They look healthy and well fed. We did find a partially eaten squirrel last weekend. They will not come to me but watch from a distance.

I love cats but do not want a ton of cats. Good chance none are spayed/neutered. 😞 They are roaming the edges of the woods. Maybe they will help with the mice.

Even as a chick he'd nap, on me.

We've had a lot of strays/ferals coming through since my outside cats passed on. I have started feeding them on a regular basis so I can TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release). Once they can't reproduce I will feed them enough to keep them around. Then the TNR cats keep the other strays away.

⬆️ Alice and Wisp, the two I am hoping to trap.

They are beautiful!

In watching these cats yesterday, I think one may be a female in heat. The smaller tuxedo kitty is getting a lot of attention from the others. 2 others keep fighting, rolling around in the yard. I heard them through the window.

I wish I knew if they belong to someone. There is a lady down the road that has several cats. I do not know her but she always has cats in her yard. LOTS! I have no problems trap/neutering/releasing a couple. I hate to do this if they belong to someone. If they keep hanging around I'll have to do something.
