Sweet Boys!
Sweet?

Well...

Last night before it was dark I went out a little earlier than usual for a coop check. The hens were up on the roost...except Martha, back in a nesting box. Nope, up on the roost she went. The juvies were running around, making lots of noise. When they tried to roost with the hens they were blocked. So eventually they noisily, and with much ado over nothing, fluttered up onto the A-frame.

The top is at eye level and they continued to bluster and fluster but started to settle down as I stood next to them, and calmly told them what handsome boys they were. Zack was pushed into the back as you can see by the photo. He'll have the last laugh, although I can see him being a little lonely at first.

Rahab abandoned the brooder, has taken her bunch into a nesting box two nights in a row.

Tamar wasn't using her box, but still is using the brooder.

My favorite part of having a broody hen is those little faces peeking out from the feathers.
And also not having to take care of chicks :D
Agreed. But I miss them roosting on my lap.

Tomorrow is the auction... :(

I have taken cockerels to this auction house twice before, but when I realize the boys are leaving, for good, I get a little funny feeling in my stomach. I'll take my baskets out to the coop once it gets dark, then put two cockerels in each basket and clamp the netting on tightly. That allows me to finish fastening the open side of the netting to the basket with string.

I made tags to attach to the baskets, each with a picture of Samuel as their father to show people what the boys will look like as adults. Oh, except for the little crossbreed. He should look like a Barred Rock when he matures.

It's not about the money, I just want them to have good homes.

I hope they get good homes too! :fl
