The May chicks are using the adult waterers, yippee!

They're hopping up on the tire to access two of the cups on the bucket waterer. I've already removed the chick feeders, I can remove the chick waterers once I am sure they're all able to drink from both of the adults' waterers.

We'll be going on vacation in about three weeks. A couple of the hens have been trying to escape when I open the door, so I was thinking about how to deter them from racing into danger if they bolt while my chicken sitter is in charge.

Not beautiful, but functional, a deterrent of sorts:

The only exit is on the right side, where a caretaker would be standing by the door.

I may tweak it more.

I see a pretty white kitty! 😍

If my birds see me coming they always gather at the run gate. If I need to take feed or treats inside sometimes I open the gate enough to just stick my hand through and toss in some crumble/pellets, scratch, cherry tomatoes, what ever I have. They all quickly run back to get what I tossed. This gives me a minute to get inside without falling or anyone running out before I can close the gate.

Maybe if your sitter tries this, they'll be less likely to have a little one slip out.

I have tried doing that, but the hens, being bantams, can squeeze themselves between the (slightly) open door and the frame, then slide under the door. Stinkers!

That kitty is Wisp, and while she looks white (with beeutiful blue eyes) she has dilute flame point Siamese markings on her nose and ears. She likes to talk, too. The chickens fascinate her. I've seen her catch a squirrel, wouldn't trust her to not pounce on a hen or chick if they got loose. It's what it is.

Observing and being observed (by three chicks)!

I'm use to the big girls. My older hens don't act like they want to go out. I guess they know the treats are served inside. ☺️

I can imagine your girls are very quick when they want to slip around.

Wisp is a very beautiful girl! Love her eyes and I see the faint markings now.
In the last photo she looks like the overseer. Not sure I'd be too trusting of her motives. 😇

I've had cats my whole life. I never trust them. Nor dogs. They will do what is part of their nature.

Is it the Dominiques that are always trying to get out or are the Sussex sneaky too?

My Dominique is much more wily than my Marans, and will take every chance she gets to slip between my boots and get out into the yard. She often sneaks by my husband when he is scooping out their coop.

Ah, the number of times I’ve heard him shout “Dadgummit little chicken, you get back here!” and then turn to see Juin running by at lightning speed to scratch under the nearest rose bush… 😁
